Meet Rose Dorn

by Nicole Hindberg

Rose Dorn played at Modest Music Festival on Saturday night at Humble Burger.

Rose Dorn is a Los Angles based trio that includes Jamie Coster, Joey Dalla Betta, and Scarlet Knight. Rose Dorn is currently on the last leg of their tour for their debut full-length album called “Days You Were Leaving”. During their performance at Modest Music Festival and during their tour, they had a guest bassist who had not played with them before.

The band had two shows in Idaho during the tour- one in Boise the night before Modfest, and in Moscow for Modfest.

The band attributes the feeling of community as the reason for them wanting to come to Modfest.

“The small community part of it seemed really cool,” Rose Dorn said. “Playing the small towns so far has been some of our favorite shows so far.”

None of the band members had been to Idaho or a festival before Modfest. A new experience was an aspect of their touring experience that they’ve been excited about.

The band was also excited about playing Modfest in the first few years that it has been in the community.

Modfest offers a wide variety of music, which fits the sound of Rose Dorn.

“Our sound is pretty much just kind of pretty indie slow, rock. Comfycore,” Rose Dorn said. “We came up with that name yesterday. It adequately describes it, comfycore. It’s kind of a combination of all our favorite things. We don’t really stick to one genre we all write so it’s a mix of literally so many different things. Country in there, shoegaze. It’s very honest music.”

The band also was excited to listen to different music that they’ve never heard before. With all the artists playing at Modfest they had plenty of opportunities.

“We’ll see a band that we’ve never heard of and think ‘wow this is my new favorite band’”, Rose Dorn said. “It’s been like that pretty regularly the last few days.”

The band has released music in the past such as their EP from 2017 called “Speak Later”. However, their full-length album has been something that’s been two years in the making.

“We sat and thought of a communal theme to it,” Rose Dorn said. “We would sit down and listen to it and write down words that kept repeating and try piece a story together out of these songs that we sensed some sort of cohesion to but couldn’t quite place it.”

The band has been together for almost three years, and many of the members were new to being a band prior to their formation. Because of this, they believe that their sound has developed through working closely with each other and learning from each other.

The band plans on coming back to Modfest again if given the opportunity. The band complemented the scenery and the warm and friendly essence of the town.
