Airs of Contempt and Derision / Unborn Ghost (2023)

KUOI 89.3 FM Moscow

Airs of Contempt and Derision is not an album for those who aspire for a life of picket fences, ticky-tack houses, and wood-paneled station wagons. Unborn Ghost seeks to lure the listener into headbanging with serious disdain towards conformity by offering twisted melodies, haunting build-ups, and fuzzy guitar tones. Simply put, it’s a solid metal/punk album that could be a good entry point for those who like metal but want to get into the heavier side of the genre. A few tracks veer away from this (Richard Cory) by implementing different instruments not usually found in metal (Acute Adverse Psychological Reaction to Lysergic Acid). Did this make the album better? It’s hard to say. Did the consistent theme of long-drawn build-ups make the album better? Again, it’s hard to say. Airs of Contempt and Derision certainly kept my attention however, I remained interested in the story throughout.

Best track: Federal Government Functionary

Scoring: 7.2/10
