REVIEW WRITTEN BY KEVAN MITCHELL (Host of “All Things Alt”)
Seed of a Seed is Haley Heynderickx’s new album, released on November 1. This album was a long time coming, as she announced it on her tour with Nickel Creek and Andrew Bird in the summer of 2024. I am happy to say that I was able to see her in concert and get a first-hand listen to some of the songs in this album. This album shares some of the sounds of Heynderickx’s previous albums but prides itself on being unique.
The album is very folky in nature and combines the sweet-sounding acoustic guitar with the calming vocals from Heynderickx herself. Every song in this album is unique, with no two sounding the same. Some of the songs hold onto a sad message while others are there to uplift you or calm you down. The album as a whole seems to tell the story of the relationship between humanity and nature, which is very prominent in the songs Mouth of a Flower and Redwoods (Anxious God).
For me, it is very hard to choose a favorite song from this album, as each one is so unique and holds its value. If I had to choose though, it would have to be the song Swoop. This song brings together beautiful instrumentals and that signature twang of Heynderickx’s voice that we have all come to love. This song also incorporates a standing bass and cello, which brings an extra layer to this song that just makes it amazing.
Overall, I would have to give this album a 9.5 out of 10. This album is wonderful for anyone who loves folk music or just anyone who loves acoustic instruments and authentic vocals.
Best track: Swoop
