Whistler / Luke Herrin (2025)

REVIEW WRITTEN BY KEVAN MITCHELL (Host of “All Things Alt”)

Whistler is a new EP released by artist Luke Herrin on January 12th. This is the first EP released by Herrin, with his other releases being two singles and an album titled Colors Today. This EP was released after teasers of it appeared on Herrin’s personal Instagram, hyping up all of the people who know him and like his music. I was personally hyped for this release as I have been able to listen to Herrin’s music since his first album and it has been amazing seeing how much his sound and production have gone up.

The album has an alternative/indie feel with a folkish undertone, with the tracks using an acoustic guitar, giving it that leg up in the folk regard. The EP only has five songs, giving the chance for them all to be cohesive without leaving the listener upset or bored with the lack of diversity. The songs all have different themes and tones, but the underlying sound of the instruments is all pretty similar, which is nice because the way that Herrin plays these instruments is mesmerizing.

My favorite song from this EP has to be Bottom of the Barrel. The vocals in this song are beautiful, with some parts of the song getting layered with a vocal effect that adds a lot of depth. The song goes through stages, with the song starting slow and then picking up with the drumline, with this process repeating until the song ends off with a soft ending, leaving the listener feeling satisfied.

Overall I will have to give this EP a 9/10, the only thing that knocked this down a little in my eyes is that there was not a lot of variation from song to song, but that is to be expected when there are so few songs to experiment with. I hope you all check out Whistler. and all of Herrin’s other works.

Best track: Bottom of the Barrel

Rating: 9/10
